Hola again parents and family! We will soon be bringing our Conclave to a close, but it’s not over yet! Since Wednesday, the Section and Lodge have done many new and exciting activities! Early Thursday morning the section woke up to a sunny, hot day, perfect for a hike in El Yunque Rainforest. The boys, all together were driven up the highest mountain and hiked to the lower part of Rio Grande, the highest part of El Yunque Rainforest. There, while we waited for our bus ride down the mountain, for the first time in the Pre-Conclave, the cultures of the United States and Puerto Rico began to be shared. The boys from Puerto Rico Lodge Yokahu 506 taught boys from Hunnikick 76, Na Tsi Hi 71, Te’Kening 37, and Japacheen 341, a Puerto Rican card game, and like-wise we taught them one. We soon retired to Camp Guajataka that evening, after a hearty meal, and went in for the night.
The next morning, we made our way up to the Arecibo Observation Telescope, the largest radio telescope in the world! We learned many things about space and radio waves at the Observatory. It is also the location of a filming of two famous movies, James Bond Golden Eye, and Contact. (No, underneath the satellite is grass, not an alien lab) After a brisk lunch we were bussed over to a Taino Indian Ceremonial ground, which was used not only as a Powwow, a place of gathering and festivities, but also as a sports arena for games the Taino people played. We then returned to Guajataka for the opening of the 2008 Conclave, Taino style, where Scouts dressed up as Taino Indians invited all of us to join them in the Conclave. We then retired, with excited spirits for the days to come, to sleep. Yesterday morning the boys awoke to colors, the Puerto Rican way. They heard the Puerto Rican National Anthem, as well as our own. The day held many activities for the Scouts, many educational, like Lodge Membership Retention, and Differences in Traditional Ceremonies. The Boys also took part in the greatest of all Scout activities, PATCH TRADING! We also got our first big rain shower while we were here. In the evening, the Scouts participated in a Hunnikick sponsored Jeopardy game. In the evening we held a party, and then fell into a peaceful sleep, coaxed by the singing Coqui frog. Tomorrow Morning we await a greatly expected event. Our fiesta at the beach! Until we see each other again, all in WWW, Adios!
